Shanghai Industrial Robotic Hub
Shanghai, which has a longstanding reputation for its innovations in finance, business, and technology, is now aiming to become an Industrial Robotic Leader, adding another feather to its cap.
The YoY output of robots used in the intelligent manufacturing sector has increased by 6% for the city. Shanghai became the top city in China for industrial robotics in 2022 with the installation of more than 75000 new robotic units. The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization's local authorities have suggested that over the next three years, the robot density in the city will rise by 100.
The number of installations per 10,000 employees is used to calculate robot density. The latest IFR( International Federation of Robotics) report on robot density places South Korea as the undisputed leader, with Singapore, Japan, and Germany following. However, China is also taking the lead in the race by outpacing the USA and moving up to fifth place with a density of 322.
The Shanghai Metropolis plans to construct 10 industry-leading robot brands, 20 city-level smart factories, and more than 100 benchmark robot applications to support the intelligent manufacturing and robotics sector, increasing the industrial output to 100 billion yuan($ 14.76 billion). The city will be featured on the global map of advanced industrial robotics by 2025 thanks to the local authorities' plans to construct 200 smart factories and 20 City Level lead factories.
The first Chinese city to include statistics on robot density is Shanghai. According to city-wide data, Shanghai has already surpassed twice the global average for robot density, with major enterprises showing a density of 260 and key industries accounting for 383 respectively. Robots have joined the city's urban digital transformation by taking on the roles of work assistants and life partners, claims Tang Enkan, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.
China's 14th Five-Year Plan, which focuses on the growth of the robotics industry, states that by 2025, the nation hopes to have emerged as a global center for robots and innovation. China is developing the robotics industry with enormous resources and investments, and it has grown to become the world's fastest-growing robot market. China wants to be recognized as a global leader in robotics by 2025, and Shanghai is making significant progress toward this objective.
